I have two unusual guests today, Nathan Baade and Randy Thom.

Nathan Baade has been involved with academic editing for the past nine years and wants to share his knowledge and expertise with others.

Randy Thom has been involved with interior designing for art galleries for the past 10 years and wants to share her knowledge with others. She is also a Proofreader.

I know many authors are also artists and thought Randy’s post might be of interest too.

Nathan Baade:

It has been 22 years since Harris co-started a business of academic translation and editing services, and throughout this time, we have dedicated ourselves to the production of high-quality English drafts of academic theses, dissertations, and papers, for professors and researchers of major universities in Asia.

Harrisco assists researchers who put their valuable research first yet wish to communicate their findings with the global community.

Thanks to the fervent support and enthusiastic encouragement from many researchers, Harrisco has achieved great feats, such as the conclusion of agreements with 78 major universities and about 200 academic institutions in Asia. In the past 22 years, Harrisco has produced an average of 40,000 papers per annum throughout its seventeen-year history totaling a whopping 700,000 contracts, Placing Harrisco as the No 1 service provider in this industry

We believe that our remarkable achievements in translation services for academic publishing can be attributed to the trust and encouragement of many researchers, who give their full support and commitment to our company for the successful distribution of their research.

Through tour continued success, we have accumulated ample experiences and know-how in the academic editing services industry, and have built a global network of proof eaders, reinforcing our core competitiveness within the proofreading and editing industry. The global network consists of 250 proofreaders and editors in 7 nations worldwide, whose professionalism is founded in various fields, such as the humanities, natural science, engineering, and medicine.

We at Harrisco believe that the key to success within the academic proofreading and editing industry is the same as that within academia itself, and our success is testament to our honesty and commitment.

How To Proofread Your Articles

If you are writing important content, whether it is an academic paper or a white paper or a webpage, having content free of errors is vital. Before you consider paying for academic proofreading, below are some tips about how to proofread your articles on your own:

First, try proofreading everything backward. This may not make sense at first, but once you give it a go, you will see why it is a good idea. Proofreading backward allows you to look at your content in a new way, without having to put it down for 24 hours.

When you read content backward, you are not going to get caught up in the flow of the argument. The content doesn’t make sense backward but it allows you to spend all of your reading time looking for mistakes.

Reading backward can catch words you overuse, sentences that you can clarify, and paragraphs you can simplify. It also will help you catch more typos and errors.

Second, stop at every punctuation mark you use. Check it to make sure it is used correctly. Sometimes you might have used a semicolon where a colon or dash is more appropriate.

Third, scan the first word of every paragraph. You may not have noticed it when you wrote it, but you might have used the same word to start a paragraph several times. Make sure you vary how you start paragraphs.

Fourth, verify how you spelled every person’s name. You can always go to Google and check that you spelled each person’s name correctly. Remember, there are many ways you can spell ‘Stephanie’, “Christine,” and “Carrie. ‘

Fifth, check all hyperlinked text. It is a different color and underlined, and it can be easy to miss typos there. Also, verify that the URL is correct.

Sixth, look for any information that you have repeated. This can happen when you have written a long paper over many days or weeks. Look for paragraphs that can be condensed or even eliminated.

Seventh, verify the spelling of every company name. When most of your audience sees a proper noun, they will probably assume it is spelled right. But if a knowledgeable reader sees a company name that is not spelled correctly, it can make you look bad and unprofessional.

Once you have proofread your article, you should be confident that you have eliminated all the errors. But you also can use academic proofreading to ensure it meets an even higher level of quality.

Randy Thom and Systemic Art Inc.

Randy Thom

Systematic Art Inc. was established by me in 2005 to offer innovative, museum-quality, professional art-hanging services through technologically advanced art-hanging hardware.  At its inception, Systematic Art served galleries, museums and, corporations worldwide. We quickly realized that our products could benefit discerning individual art collectors as well. Over the years, the Systematic team took many unique and conceptual approaches to its installations that planted the seeds for the company’s development and manufacturing of its own dedicated picture-hanging hardware.
